“Failure to Launch Syndrome” refers to young adults who are not moving forward or maturing in a way that’s appropriate their age and who are not meeting the expectations of their parents and other loved ones. A multitude of factors may contribute to their inability to manage the multiple challenges of adulthood. These factors include:
- Mental illness
- Substance use disorder
- Dysfunctional family dynamics
- Unresolved childhood trauma
Common behaviors in those afflicted with Failure to Launch Syndrome include:
- Low tolerance for distress
- Low motivation
- Low or no work ethic
- Lack of basic living skills
- Lack of vision for the future
Due to the complexity of this Syndrome, treatment for struggling young adults demands a unique and personalized approach. At the Claudia Black Young Adult Center, our goal is to help such individuals obtain the life skills necessary for successful independence.
